It is hard to believe that the world faces a lack of water when seventy per cent of it is made up of bodies of water. Since ninety per cent of the bodies of water consist of the ocean and the seas there is a great risk of contamination. Combine that with the increase in the growth of the population and the rise of industries there is a great need for industrial water treatment. Global water use doubles every twenty years. That is why it is so important for research into ways to better treat the water. There are concerns over;
1. Environmental safety
2. Health issues
3. Scarcity of water
4. Water conservation
These concerns have demanded that water treatment plants keep their water management systems up to date. Manufacturers have to keep coming up with new technologies in order to keep up with the growing needs.
Current trends in water treatment include;
1. Boosting resiliency
2. Less pumping of groundwater
3 Reuses of wastewater
4. Large-scale desalination of seawater
5. Water filter capsules
7. Consumer education
The infrastructure of the water is constantly being disrupted by natural disasters. Managing the flow of stormwater requires the need for a high capacity water treatment device. Increasing the budgets for these devices opens opportunities for the manufactures. It also opens the door for budgetary reforms for the development of better technologies such as a water treatment plant that does not use power.
Less pumping of groundwater
With the scarcity of water people are becoming more aware of the importance of reusing water. This also includes developing systems that are centralized for the distribution treating water. Water and wastewater divisions are expected to take the lead in the efforts to create better systems for the processing of groundwater as well as regulating sustainable water systems.
Reuse of wastewater
With natural water supply not being available in arid areas reusing water helps wastewater treatment sustainable as well as much more cost effective. Recycled water is mainly used for non-potable water. If, there is any chance that humans will be exposed to the non-drinking water it has to be more thoroughly treated. Health problems could occur if the recycled water contains contaminants. The recycled water is best used for things such as golf courses, farmers fields, and cooling water for industries.
While nonpotable water is mainly recycled for nonhuman consumption there are a few ways that it is possible to turn into potable water. The potable water comes from the recharging of groundwater aquifers. Surface water reservoirs are injected into the groundwater aquifers to aid the groundwater. It also keeps the intrusion of saltwater in coastal areas.
Researchers are facing a lot of challenges. There are new things constantly being placed into the water. There are exotic metals that the researches need to develop ways of treating. Water shortages are placing the demand that recycling water is developed into ways that make it more usable.
Large-scale desalination of seawater
Seawater desalination requires a lot of chemicals and energy. With regions such as Africa and the Middle East needing more and more industrial water treatment companies are focusing on creating eco-friendly processes. They are also working on designing machinery that will take less energy to have less of an impact on the environment.
There are two types of membrane filtration. Low pressure and high-pressure membranes. Membrane filtration has changed over the years due to the amount of research being performed. Treatment of groundwater uses nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membranes which are large scaled. Membrane filtration has been taken further due to the research of a team from Japan and the Penn State’s ATOMI Centre director.
The membranes that they developed are sturdier than the present filtration systems and are smaller scale. The new membrane can handle the exposure to chlorine and intense cross flow because of the polysulfone membrane having been coated with graphenes.
The membranes are slowly taking the place of the chemicals that are placed into the water.
Water filter capsules
Purified water is necessary for consumption in order to keep infections from happening. The QPoint Water Filter Capsules are placed in water in order to kill the fungi, protozoa, and bacteria that are in the water. The capsules retain the bacteria using the supermembranes that are in it.
Having clean and safe water is vital to the population. Keeping it secure is a necessity. The Environmental Protection Agency is doing the following;
1. Constantly assessing and reducing vulnerability to possible terrorist attacks
2. Designing plans for, and practising responses to emergencies
3. Researching security technologies that aid in the detection of contaminants while also preventing security breaches
In today’s world thinking that the water supply is safe because all of the requirements are met is irresponsible as well as dangerous. It is important that all parties responsible for clean water take steps in preparing as well as preventing anything happening to the water system.
With water being a much-needed commodity it is important that consumers practice the best use of water. The United Nations believes that education is important to teaching consumers how to conserve water. Water education includes sanitation, hygiene and the fetching of water. Behavioural changes are needed and this can only be done through education.
With all of these new trends in the water wastewater sector, it is causing consumers to have to pay more for their water. Disinfection byproduct control, the removal of contaminants and security concerns are constantly being researched. New ways to provide the best water are currently being developed. Along with all of these new designs, new regulations also come along.
The treatment of water has caused the developers to work on technologies that are going to be more cost-effective with more effective treatment. It is hoped that eventually, the researchers will find a way to not only treat the water but to bring the cost down. The ways in which water is treated will change as researchers bring us these new technologies.
